What it really costs to buy and sell shares in Nepal

When you trade on the Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE), the price on the screen is not what you pay or receive. Each buy and each sell carries a broker commission, a SEBON regulatory fee and a DP (depository) charge, and a profitable sale also pays capital gains tax. On small trades these costs can take a noticeable share of the profit. This calculator shows every charge, the real cost per share and the price you must sell at just to break even.

Charges used in the calculator

Transaction amount (Rs)Broker commission
Up to 50,0000.36% (minimum Rs 10)
50,001 to 5,00,0000.33%
5,00,001 to 20,00,0000.31%
20,00,001 to 1,00,00,0000.27%
Above 1,00,00,0000.24%
  • SEBON fee: 0.015% of the transaction amount, on both buy and sell.
  • DP charge: Rs 25 per company per settlement.
  • Capital gains tax (from FY 2083/84): 10% for individuals holding 365 days or less, 7.5% for individuals holding longer, and 10% for institutions. Use "Other rate" if the rate changes or for older trades (earlier rates were 7.5% and 5% for individuals).

Worked example

Buying 100 shares at Rs 500: the amount is Rs 50,000, commission 0.36% is Rs 180, SEBON fee Rs 7.50 and DP charge Rs 25, so you pay Rs 50,212.50, or Rs 502.13 per share. Selling them at Rs 600 within a year gives Rs 60,000, less Rs 198 commission, Rs 9 SEBON fee and Rs 25 DP charge, which leaves Rs 59,768. The gain of Rs 9,555.50 attracts 10% tax (Rs 955.55), so the net profit is about Rs 8,600.

Frequently asked questions

What is WACC?

The weighted average cost of capital is the average cost per share of all your purchases of a company, including charges. Meroshare shows it after you buy. The broker uses it to work out your capital gains tax, so if you bought at different prices, enter your WACC as the buying price and choose "Yes, price already includes costs".

Is this investment advice?

No. The calculator only works out costs and tax on prices you enter. Rates set by SEBON and the Finance Act can change, so confirm the figures on your broker's contract note.
