Brick Calculator (Bricks, Cement, Sand)
Number of bricks and mortar materials for 9 inch and 4 inch walls, using Nepal standard brick size.
Brick size and assumptions
Default is the Nepal standard brick, 240 × 115 × 57 mm, laid with 10 mm joints.

How many bricks do I need?
Enter the length and height of the wall, subtract doors and windows, and choose a 9 inch or 4 inch wall. The calculator gives the number of bricks, the cement bags and the sand for the mortar. It uses the Nepal standard brick size of 240 × 115 × 57 mm with a 10 mm mortar joint. If your local kiln bricks are a different size, change it under Brick size and assumptions.
Method
- Volume of brickwork = net wall area × wall thickness.
- Size of one brick with mortar = (240+10) × (115+10) × (57+10) mm = 0.002094 m³, so about 478 bricks per m³.
- Wet mortar = brickwork volume − volume of the bricks themselves (about 25% of the wall).
- Dry mortar = wet mortar × 1.33, then split by the mortar ratio. Cement bags = cement volume × 1440 ÷ 50.
| Wall | Thickness | Bricks per sq ft of wall (approx.) | Bricks per m² (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full brick (9 inch) | 240 mm | 10.7 | 115 |
| Half brick (4 inch) | 115 mm | 5.1 | 55 |
Frequently asked questions
Which mortar ratio should I use?
1:6 cement-sand mortar is common for 9 inch load-sharing and partition walls in houses. 1:4 is used for 4 inch walls and where more strength is needed. Follow the ratio in your drawings or specification.
Why add wastage?
Some bricks break during transport and cutting at corners and openings. 5% is a common allowance; use more for poor-quality bricks.
Next step: work out the plaster quantity for the same wall.
