Rebar weight formula: D²/162
Steel rods are sold by weight in Nepal, but drawings and bar bending schedules give diameter, length and number of bars. The quick way to convert is the D²/162 rule: the weight of one metre of bar in kg equals the diameter in mm squared divided by 162.
It comes from the density of steel, 7850 kg/m³: weight per metre = (π/4) × D² × 7850 / 10⁶ = D² / 162.2. For a 12 mm bar that is 144 / 162 = 0.888 kg/m, so a 12 m length weighs about 10.66 kg.
How to use
- Pick the bar diameter, enter the cutting length of one bar and the number of bars.
- Add rows for other sizes to total a full bar bending schedule.
- Add the market rate per kg if you want the cost.
The Estimate from concrete tab gives a rough figure for early budgeting, using typical steel percentages for residential RCC. Real quantities depend on the structural design and should come from the bar bending schedule.
Frequently asked questions
How many kg is one 12 mm rod?
A standard 12 m long, 12 mm bar weighs about 10.65 kg. A 16 mm bar of 12 m weighs about 18.9 kg, and a 10 mm bar about 7.4 kg.
How much steel does a house need per square foot?
For typical two or three storey RCC framed houses in Nepal, steel is often in the range of 3.5 to 5 kg per sq ft of built-up area. The house construction cost estimator uses this kind of thumb rule.
