How NEA calculates a household electricity bill
The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) bills domestic customers in two parts. The energy charge is worked out slab by slab: the first units are cheap and later units cost more. On top of that comes a minimum charge, which depends on the size of your meter (5, 15, 30 or 60 ampere) and on the band your total monthly units fall in. This calculator applies the same rules so you can check a bill, compare meter sizes, or see how much a new heater or induction cooker will add.
Domestic single phase tariff
| Units per month | 5 A | 15 A | 30 A | 60 A | Energy rate (Rs/unit) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 to 20 | 30 | 50 | 75 | 125 | 0 (5 A), 4 (15 A), 5 (30 A), 6 (60 A) |
| 21 to 30 | 50 | 75 | 100 | 125 | 6.50 |
| 31 to 50 | 50 | 75 | 100 | 125 | 8.00 |
| 51 to 100 | 75 | 100 | 125 | 150 | 9.50 |
| 101 to 250 | 100 | 125 | 150 | 200 | 9.50 |
| Above 250 | 150 | 175 | 200 | 250 | 11.00 |
The four meter columns show the monthly minimum charge in rupees. On a 5 A meter, the first 20 units are free if you use 20 units or less in the month; above that they are charged at Rs 3 per unit.
Three phase meters
Three phase low voltage domestic meters pay a minimum charge of Rs 1,100 (up to 10 kVA) or Rs 1,800 (above 10 kVA), with energy at Rs 10.50 per unit from Asar to Kartik and Rs 11.50 per unit from Mangsir to Jestha.
Worked example
A home on a 15 A meter uses 120 units. Energy: 20 × 4 + 10 × 6.50 + 20 × 8 + 50 × 9.50 + 20 × 9.50 = Rs 970. The total is in the 101 to 250 band, so the minimum charge is Rs 125. The bill is about Rs 1,095, or Rs 1,075.60 if paid within 7 days of the meter reading.
Tips to keep the bill down
- Every unit above 250 costs Rs 11, so heavy loads such as geysers and room heaters push the bill up quickly.
- Pay within 7 days of the meter reading to get the 2% rebate.
- Choose the meter size by your real load. A larger meter has a higher minimum charge every month.
Frequently asked questions
How do I read the units from my meter?
Subtract last month's reading (printed on your bill) from the current reading on the meter display. Switch to the "Meter readings" tab above and enter both numbers.
Are these the latest rates?
The figures follow the NEA domestic consumer tariff. Tariffs are revised by the Electricity Regulatory Commission from time to time, so check the NEA website or your bill if the numbers do not match.
