1 Cubic Metre in Cubic Feet (cft): m³ to cft for Site Work

1 cubic metre (m³) is equal to 35.3147 cubic feet (cft). Going the other way, 1 cft is 0.0283 m³, so 100 cft of sand is about 2.83 m³.

Drawings and rate analysis in Nepal are mostly in metric units, but sand, gitti and stone are often ordered in cft on site. This quick guide shows the conversion and gives a table you can use at the site.

Why 1 cubic metre equals 35.3147 cft

1 foot = 0.3048 m exactly, so 1 m = 1 ÷ 0.3048 = 3.28084 ft.

A cube 1 m on each side is 3.28084 ft on each side. Its volume in cubic feet is 3.28084 × 3.28084 × 3.28084 = 35.3147 cft.

The reverse: 0.3048 × 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.0283168 m³ in one cft.

1 m³ = 35.31 cft 1 m = 3.281 ft 1 m = 3.281 ft 1 m 3.28084 × 3.28084 × 3.28084 = 35.3147 cft 1 cft = 1 ft × 1 ft × 1 ft = 0.0283 m³ m³ to cft: multiply by 35.31 cft to m³: multiply by 0.0283
A one metre cube holds about 35.31 cubic feet because each edge is 3.281 ft.

Sand and gitti loads in cft

Suppliers often sell sand and aggregate by the "trip" or "load", quoted in cft. The volume of a trip is not a fixed standard. It depends on the tractor trailer or tipper body size, and on how high it is heaped. Two suppliers can mean quite different amounts by "one tipper".

The safe way is to measure the body yourself. Example: a box 10 ft long, 6 ft wide and filled 2 ft deep holds 10 × 6 × 2 = 120 cft, which is 120 × 0.0283168 = 3.40 m³. Also remember that damp sand bulks up, so the same weight of sand can show more cft when wet.

Worked example

An excavation pit is 3 m × 2 m × 1.5 m deep. Volume = 9 m³ = 9 × 35.3147 = 317.83 cft. Loose soil after digging takes more space than this, so plan disposal trips with some margin.

The engineering unit converter handles volume, area and length. For digging volumes, the excavation and earthwork calculator does the sum, and the concrete calculator gives sand and aggregate in both m³ and cft.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1 m³ equal to 35.5 cft?

No. The correct value is 35.3147. Some people round it to 35.3 or 35.31, which is fine. 35.5 is off by about half a percent.

How many cft in 1 cubic yard?

1 cubic yard is 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 cft, or 0.7646 m³.

How many litres in 1 cft?

1 cft is about 28.32 litres, since 1 m³ is 1000 litres.
