Writing amounts in words the Nepali way
Cheques, bills, tender documents and measurement books in Nepal need the amount written in words, and they use the lakh-crore system rather than millions and billions. This tool writes any number up to 15 digits in Nepali words (एक लाख पच्चीस हजार), in English words using lakh and crore, and in the international million-billion style for foreign clients. It also converts digits into Nepali numerals (०-९).
How to use it
- Type the number. Commas are ignored, and Nepali digits such as १२३४ are accepted too.
- Choose Rupees amount to get "Rupees ... Only" with paisa, or Plain number for quantities.

Frequently asked questions
How is 1,25,000 written in Nepali?
एक लाख पच्चीस हजार. In English with the lakh system it is One Lakh Twenty-Five Thousand.
Why are the numbers 1 to 99 all different words in Nepali?
Unlike English, Nepali has a separate word for every number from 1 to 99 (for example ५५ is पचपन्न and ७८ is अठहत्तर), so they have to be learned or looked up. The tool uses the standard spelling for each.

Example 1: a contractor's running bill
A running bill for a house job comes to Rs 1247350.75. Type it with or without commas and choose Rupees amount. The tool shows:
- Formatted: 12,47,350.75 (Nepali numerals: १२,४७,३५०.७५)
- Nepali: रु. बाह्र लाख सतचालीस हजार तीन सय पचास रुपैयाँ पचहत्तर पैसा मात्र

Use the lakh version on Nepali cheques, bills and measurement books. Use the international version only for a foreign client or a document written in million and billion.
Example 2: a land price in crore
A plot is agreed at Rs 3,25,00,000. The tool writes it as रु. तीन करोड पच्चीस लाख रुपैयाँ मात्र, or Rupees Three Crore Twenty-Five Lakh Only. In the international style the same figure is Thirty-Two Million Five Hundred Thousand. Many mistakes in agreements come from someone reading 3.25 crore as 3.25 million; the gap is ten times.
Example 3: a quantity, not money
For a quantity such as 105000 bricks, choose Plain number. The result is एक लाख पाँच हजार, or One Lakh Five Thousand, with no "Rupees" and no "Only".

Quick rule: 10 lakh = 1 million, 1 crore = 10 million, 1 arab = 100 crore = 1 billion.
How the tool handles paisa
In Rupees mode the tool keeps two decimal places and rounds to the nearest paisa. If the paisa round up to 100, it adds one rupee. For example, 999.995 becomes 1,000 and is written Rupees One Thousand Only. In Plain number mode the digits after the decimal point are read out one by one, for example "Point Five".
Writing the amount on a cheque or bill
- Write the figure with lakh commas, for example 12,47,350.75, so it matches the words.
- Start the words close to the left edge of the line so nothing can be added in front.
- End with "Only" in English or मात्र in Nepali, and draw a line through any space left.
- Check that the words and the figure agree before you sign. If your bank has its own format, follow it.
Common mistakes
- Mixing systems. "Twelve Lakh Forty-Seven Thousand" and "One Million Two Hundred Forty-Seven Thousand" are both correct, but never write "Twelve Lakh" in a document that uses million elsewhere.
- Spelling lakh as "lac" or "lacs". It is still common on old letterheads; "Lakh" is the clearer form in English.
- Using "and" in the middle of the rupees. Keep "and" only before the paisa, as the tool does, so the amount cannot be read two ways.
- Getting Nepali numbers 1 to 99 wrong. Each has its own word (४७ is सतचालीस, ७५ is पचहत्तर). Copy them from the tool rather than writing from memory.

How do I write 1 crore 20 lakh in words?
1,20,00,000 is One Crore Twenty Lakh, or एक करोड बीस लाख. In the international style it is Twelve Million.
Is arab the same as billion?
Yes. 1 arab = 1,00,00,00,000 = 1 billion. 1 kharab = 100 arab = 100 billion.
Can I type Nepali digits?
Yes. Digits such as १२४७३५० are read the same as 1247350, and commas or spaces are ignored.
