Electrical engineering MCQ: what this set covers

This page is a free question bank for electrical engineers in Nepal who are preparing for the Nepal Engineering Council (NEC) registration exam, Lok Sewa Aayog and provincial public service commission exams, and technical tests at the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) and other utilities. Every question has four options, the correct answer and a short explanation. Numerical questions show the full working, so you can check your own steps instead of only the final number.

The questions are written and checked by our team. When a question is based on a past exam, it is reworded and solved independently. Always confirm the current exam format in the official notice from NEC or the commission.

How the NEC electrical licence exam works

The NEC registration exam for electrical engineers follows the same layout as the other branches: 100 marks made up of 60 one-mark questions and 20 two-mark questions, to be answered in two hours. The pass mark is 50 percent. Nine chapters are specific to electrical engineering and the tenth chapter, project planning, design and implementation, is common to every branch. The NEC mock test on this page follows that layout: one 1-mark question from each sub-section and two 2-mark questions from each chapter.

Chapters in this question bank

  1. Basic electrical engineering: DC and AC circuits, network theorems, three-phase systems, transients, diodes, transistors and op-amps.
  2. Digital logic and microprocessor: number systems, Boolean algebra, combinational and sequential circuits, 8085 architecture and programming.
  3. Programming language and its applications: C programming basics, loops, functions, arrays and pointers.
  4. Electrical measurement and instrumentation: errors, PMMC and moving-iron meters, wattmeters and energy meters, bridges, CTs and PTs, CRO and transducers.
  5. Control systems: transfer functions, time response, steady-state error, Routh-Hurwitz stability, root locus and Bode plots.
  6. Electrical machines: transformers, DC machines, induction motors and synchronous machines.
  7. Power electronics and drives: SCR, IGBT and MOSFET, controlled rectifiers, choppers, inverters and motor speed control.
  8. Power system analysis: hydropower generation, line parameters, sag, per-unit calculations, fault analysis, load flow and stability.
  9. Switchgear, protection and utilization: relays, circuit breakers, earthing, surge arresters, illumination, solar PV and batteries, heating, traction and power factor correction.
  10. Project planning, design and implementation: shared with all branches. The mock test pulls these questions from our engineering economics, planning and professional practice MCQ page.

How to use this page

  • Mock tests: choose the NEC mock for a full timed paper, or the Lok Sewa / NEA set for a 50-question paper with 20 percent negative marking.
  • Practice by topic: pick a chapter and sub-section, choose how many questions you want, and see the answer and explanation after each one.
  • My progress: your scores, mistakes and saved questions stay in this browser, so you can come back and practise only the questions you got wrong.

The bank is new and grows every week. Chapters with fewer questions today will fill up, and new questions show up here automatically.

Study tips for electrical engineers

  • Machines and power systems carry the most weight in most technical papers. Practise transformer efficiency and regulation, induction motor slip and power flow, and per-unit fault calculations until they are quick.
  • Learn the standard results by heart: 2Vm/π for a full-wave rectifier, √3 between line and phase quantities, ½LI² for inductor energy, and the second-order overshoot formula.
  • For negative-marking exams, skip a question when you can eliminate fewer than two options.
  • Check units in every numerical answer. Many wrong options in this bank are the result of a common slip, such as using peak instead of RMS values or forgetting the factor of four in maximum power transfer.

Other engineering MCQ sections

Civil engineers can use the full NEC and Lok Sewa civil engineering mock tests with more than 2,100 questions across 11 chapters. Sections for mechanical, computer and electronics engineering are being prepared and will open on the same practice hub.
